The Village of Maria da Fonte The identity of Maria da Fonte is still a mystery today. During some troubling times in the 19th century, the government’s opposition becomes threatening and the first rebellions arise. The prohibition of burials inside temples was reason enough for the women of Póvoa de Lanhoso to organize manifestations. According to some, Maria da Fonte was the name given to a group of women who fought for liberty. Others defend that this was one specific woman. Between commerce and restaurants, a rich heritage, the “Casa da Cultura” (Cultural House), the Pontido Park and an agenda full of assorted activities, there are more than enough reasons to discover and get to know the village of Maria da Fonte. |
