The fresh airs of the Peneda Gerês National Park attribute Melgaço unmistakably pleasant characteristics. Gastronomy, especially smoked ham and sausages, kid and sweet “bucho”, allied to its famous Alvarinho, are an important mark of local culture and popular tradition. For remembering later on, there is a very distinctive handcraft with wool capes, typical dolls or linen work. Its historical, religious, archaeological and cultural heritage is of recognized importance and the invitation is also extended to pay a visit to the museum spaces which portray the many aspects of its history and the activities of the municipality. In what concerns health tourism, the best bet is clearly the municipality’s thermal resort, located in Peso. Of great value are also the villages found in Melgaço, where cultural roots are most profound and where the soul and identity of Northern Minho lies. |
