Veiga da Mira

This natural pasture land stretched along the left bank of the Minho River crosses the parishes of S. Pedro da Torre, Arão e Cristelo Côvo. Is characterized by an extensive area of flooded land where riparian vegetation of thicket predominates, a privileged habitat home to various migratory birds and the otter. Site of great ecological interest, the Veiga da Mira is classified as a Special Protection Zone for the estuaries of the rivers Minho and Coura, and makes part of the Natura 2000 Network. This area also includes one of the “geira” trails, the Roman route, and a small fortress dated from the Restoration War. With about 300 hectares these lands are of great environmental and cultural value.
