Santa Luzia Mountain A place of great beauty, the Santa Luzia Mountain is a true ex-libris of Viana do Castelo and of the whole region. Considered one of the world’s most beautiful lookouts, it provides a breathtaking view of the Lima estuary, the city and the ocean. Dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the basilica is an early 20th century construction and an important place of religious cult. Close to the temple-monument is the “Citânia” (ruins of a celtic and pre-roman settlement), classified as a national monument and one of the most important “castros” in the Northwest Peninsula. For those who want to enjoy the peacefulness that this place offers, the Pousada Viana do Castelo – Historic Hotel is always an excellent choice. A good option to climb the Santa Luzia Mountain and enjoy all the natural surroundings is the lift, a work of 1923, target of various interventions throughout the ages. It travels the 650 meters that separate the foot of the mountain from its summit, in only seven minutes. On foot or bicycle, there is a lot more to discover on the hills of Santa Luzia on one of the existing pedestrian paths and always side by side with nature’s tranquillity. |
