Cathedral of Braga The beginning of the construction of the Cathedral of Braga dates back to the end of the 11th century, being the first Portuguese Cathedral to be built, influencing by that time the development of the city around itself. Fundamental ex-libris and paradigmatic of the History of Braga, it gathers several architectural styles from the different eras that it has crossed, from its consecration until today. The romanesque, the gothic of different phases and inspirations and the baroque, are the main elements of a wonderful stylistic mosaic, that congregates fascinating chapels (of the Kings, of S. Geraldo, of Gloria), cloisters and an exceptional treasure. In the interior of the Cathedral, the tomb of the Infante D. Afonso de Portugal, the firstborn son of D. João I and D. Filipa de Lencastre, can still be observed. |
